Breaking in as a Freelance Writer

Breaking in to the freelance world of magazines and newspapers, either in print or online, needn't be daunting.  With social media, blogs, literary journals and new publications coming on board, the possibilities are endless. Our focus will be on non-fiction for both novice and experienced writers. We will discuss everything from writing short news stories to longer personal essays. Each stage of the writing process from preparation to submission will be covered.  In addition, there will be time for writing and readings.

Everyone is welcome to bring previous work to class for critique.  Students will be given an assignment to complete between sessions, which will then be discussed. There will be opportunities to discuss work online between sessions.

Weekend Writing Warriors

The weekend writing warrior will love this course designed to help them write fiction or non-fiction for pleasure or publication. No previous writing experience is necessary.  Critiquing work will be part of the course. Students are invited to bring any writing they've already done.

Course length:
30 hours total over 2 consecutive weekends

Group limited to 12 participants

Writing to Soothe Body, Mind, and Spirit

Learn how writing can be used to heal past traumas and help you move from an unhealthy past to a healthier future. Various writing styles and exercises are used including clustering, free-form and prose. Participants will be free to share their work and to ask for critique if they feel comfortable doing so.

Creative Non-Fiction

This can include writing that may be loosely based on actual people, places and things. In class, we will discuss all the elements of a good story, including setting, character, voice, tense and themes.
